It's September! Where oh where did the summer go?

Welcome to a new school year.  I'm very excited about some of the changes we have put in place.  I am looking forward to more math time to explore and apply the math concepts taught in our texts.  I have new materials and programs to share with the students.  We will be learning together which makes it all more fun.

This year, all math students will be expected to have a single subject spiral notebook with pockets for each marking period (that's a total of 4 for the year) to be used only for math. The left page will be used for notes and the right side for homework. They will also need one separate single subject notebook to be used only for Math Enrichment.  This notebook will be left in the classroom everyday.

Math books should be covered at all times with paper covers (brown bags work really well). Book socks will not be allowed because they bend the covers and separate the binding. Each student will also need a pencil case with at least three pencils, an eraser, and a calculator. I recommend purchasing the TI 30IIXS because that is the one I will be using to demonstrate lessons and is also used for standardized testing. Agenda books will be distributed and are expected to be utilized. The marking period math grade will include tests and quizzes.  Homework will be a separate component.

Homework will be check everyday.  Homework that is complete and done neatly to the best of your ability will receive one point. Incomplete assignments will receive a .5 and homework not in class on the assigned day will receive a zero.  A one day grace period will be given for homework not completed on time.  Homework handed in late will receive a .5 grade. Notebooks will be collected at the end of the marking periods and given a quiz grade, based on their completeness and neatness.

Math Enrichment - Grades 6, 7, and 8

Everyday math skills are not always recognized by students through exposure to text books alone.  Math Enrichment will present math as applied to real-time situations. Students will create and solve math problems utilizing the Smart Board, calculators, computers, workbooks, and various manipulatives. Students will also be introduced to finance, budgets, economics, analysis, and estimation, among other topics. Activities will encompass the Core Curriculum Content Standards for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.

PRE-ALGEBRA  We will also be using our Math Enrichment time to prepare for the NJASK. We review the Core Curriculum Content Standards for 7th grade and apply strategies to solve real world problems.
